Week 18 & 19: print("hello, world")

· 1min

A week of sprint, then a week of Python.

Exam Results

As mentioned in my last post, we conducted “re”-exams for Math and CS. This time, they did very well, most of them. There are still a few that need to put in a lot of work and the feedback has been shared.

Sprint with Shivam

I wanted to start programming last week (Week 18), but given the results of a few students and their over-all performance on Flowcharts and Algorithms, we decided to bring them up to speed.

Shivam did a week long sprint, including a 5 hour long sprint on Saturday to help them practice.

Hello world

After four months of build up, this week we finally started with the foundations of Python Programming.

The bespoke “hello, world”!

Scratch vs Code

The core idea was to draw as many parallels as possible between Scratch and source code:

Scratch vs Code
Scratch vs Code

Then we spent a lot of time writing simple programs with print and input functions. Then a lecture on variables and operators.

I have left them with 100+ practice problems: find the output, write python program, find errors, etc.

Again, you can find all the slides, practice problems, and notes in the teacher’s handbook.

Next up is conditional and loops, the two most important pillars of programming.

Fun Saturday

We played “Pictionary” with the goal to improve their vocab.
