Week 1

· 2min

Here I sit, at the Hyderabad Airport, waiting for boarding my flight to Jagdalpur. I had come to Hyderabad for Frappe Local event at T-Hub.

Slowing a bit down

As mentioned in last week’s post, I tried to slow it down. Slow down does not mean less material or something, but taking up easier topics before Intermediate to Advanced topics (e.g. VLOOKUP, COUNTIF in LibreOffice Calc).

I only took classes for 3 days this week. Mathematics classes by Vishwajeet are also regular now: started with solving of the entrance exam paper, then sets, relations, etc. As decided before hand, yesterday Shivam did a “walkthrough” of the first problem set (all of them had submitted on time!).

Internet Lecture (Take 1)

I decided to teach foundations of internet on Monday, but it didn’t go that well. I was not satisfied with the lecture I gave. It felt like just dropping a lot of acronyms: IP, TCP, WWW, etc.

I could also see it on their faces, bored and even sleepy.

So I decided to redo it the next day.

Preparing for Take 2

After going back to the office, I opened up CS50T’s lecture on “Internet” and went through it noting down “memorable moments” and flow David had taken, specially the DHCP, actual postal envelopes for packets across the internet, and a nice video of sub-sea cables by Business Insider.

The next day while on the way to Campus, Rahul and I bought a dozen envelopes, and printed Cat photos. When I was done with the lecture, I knew it had worked! There was interest and a lot of interesting questions. It had clicked for them.

Then we watched some more videos of sub-sea cable installations and repair.

LibreOffice Impress

After the internet lecture, I decided to pick up the third leg of office software: slideshow. Along the way I explained them terms like “layout” and more. The home work was obvious: prepare and give a presentation on “The Internet”.

Misc.

For submissions of the assignment, Frappe Mail had some issue with ZIP file. It turned out to be an issue in Framework and the deadline was hours later. I had to “vibe” a form which submitted to an R2 bucket directly from this site (cs17.org, astro based). I could have done in Frappe, but Frappe Cloud was having deployment issues. Now that Isha is working on a full-fledged custom app for CS17 portal, we will have a much smoother process.

The projector and the pull-down screen have arrived, and will be installed this week. Electricity black out (for hours) is an issue, but we are procuring an invertor, so that should help.

Up Next

Grade problem set 1 and work on the next problem set. Plus I have to prepare for wrapping up (for now) the office stack of application software.
